Katie Brooks is an eighteen-year-old photographer, writer and artist. She lives in America, more specifically in Maryland. Her interest in art started at an early age but she didn’t discover the field of photography until she was fourteen. Entirely self-taught she enjoys taking photographs of the world and people around her. The first time she picked up a camera (and when she say’s “first time” what she means is seriously picked up a camera. As in picked up the camera without her mother standing behind her during the 97’ Christmas party whispering violently in her ear to go take pictures of everyone, because one day she’ll want to look back on all the happy memories) she was standing in her kitchen and decided it would be a good idea to take pictures of a mangled orange that her sister had left on the counter. Ever since then she’s been hooked.
Since that fateful evening, where she had to persuade her father for at least a good twenty-two minutes before he let her use his camera, she has been taking pictures of everything she sees. Most of the time she can be found photographing her friends and the majority of her work is portraiture. However, her interests are not limited to just one area; she is always working on expanding her horizons. Someday she wishes to have the opportunity to photograph all kinds of people and places. She finds it fascinating to have the ability to capture a moment in time and plans on continuing with photography for the rest of her life even if it turns out just to be a hobby.
For the better part of her life Katie has had a book in her hand. She loves reading and as the years passed she found she has the same passion for writing. She wrote her first story in second grade. It was about a group of girls who venture into a mall and end up having to ward off angry blue haired shoplifters. The book now rests in a trunk in her mother’s basement and is complete with hand-colored illustration by the eight-year-old Katie herself. Katie was always writing stories but never actually managed to finish one until she was in the ninth grade. (For some reason Katie could never stay focused long enough to get past page six or seven. She blames her imagination. There were always too many ideas floating around in there to keep track of everything.) In the twelfth grade Katie won first place in the SoMIRAC writing competition for high school young authors. (She was really stoked about this because she got a Barnes & Nobel gift card.) She is currently enrolled in university studying writing as well as art.
